The Story

Fins - big, small, or none at all? Cadillac’s iconic tailfins had shrunk by ’64, but this second-gen Coupe DeVille still flaunts just enough rear flair to scream "Caddy" from a mile away. Up front, it’s a one-year-only stunner. A bi-angular grille sweeps around the sides, paired with a sleeker bumper than its ’63 predecessor. Under the hood, the jump from 390ci to a meaty 429ci V8 unleashed 340 horsepower and a tire-shredding 480 lb-ft of torque. A quote from the March 1964 issue of Motor Trend stated that "if there's ever been anything this big that'll move this fast, we haven't heard of it". Reported 0-60 times were 8.5 seconds!

The seller purchased this DeVille 4 years ago from an estate sale auction in Culver City, CA. The DeVille was reportedly a one owner car and always located in Southern California, evidenced by the lack of rust in the body and floors. The seller owns a body shop and was not satisfied with the paint at the time of purchase, so his team sanded, primed, and painted it in it's original shade of blue. The DeVille originally had a vinyl top, which was deleted to give it a more sleek look. The seller was told that "all of the trim was there", but it turned out that some of it was missing. This stalled the project and then the body shop moved to a smaller location and there was no room to store it. The DeVille currently resides in a friend's backyard as pictured and has been under a car cover for one year.

It holds a clean California title in the name of the body shop. There is a reserve price that will need to be met in order for it to sell.

What You Get

This ’64 Coupe DeVille is a running and driving project, last hitting the road a year ago for a 10-mile trip from the body shop to its current backyard storage spot. The drivetrain is reportedly all original, featuring that beefy 429ci V8 pumping out 340 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque - enough to hustle this big Caddy from 0-60 in 8.5 seconds back in the day. The engine fires up easily and settles into a smooth idle, hinting at its well-preserved condition. All the air conditioning components are present and accounted for, but will undoubtedly need a recharge at least.

The body is a standout, having been professionally sanded, primed, and repainted in its original shade of blue by the seller’s body shop team, a job valued around $8,000. Rust is a non-issue here - body, floors, and frame are clean, a perk of its Southern California history. Both bumpers and the tail light bezels have been freshly re-chromed, and the lower half of the one-year-only bi-angular grille comes included, along with its related parts. You’ll also get a pile of additional exterior trim as pictured—some might be correct, some might not, so it will need to be sorted out. All the glass is intact with no cracks, and the four original steel wheels come capped with their classic wheel covers.

Inside, you’re stepping into an unrestored time capsule. The original seat material is in good shape, though it’s begging for a deep clean to really shine. The dash is complete and holding up impressively well. A period-correct 8-track player sits tucked in the glove box, wired up with a control knob mounted under the dash—perfect for cruising to some vintage tunes, assuming you can find a working tape. It’s a solid foundation that’s ready for your personal touch, whether you keep it original or go custom.

What You Need

This DeVille’s exterior is ready for reassembly, from the grille to the side trim, rear window trim, tail lights, rear end panels, and assorted smaller bits. The headlights and bezels are missing. The side view mirrors are in the mix too, but the exterior door handles are missing, so you’ll need to source those. The grille itself could use some restoration and straightening of a bent rib to get it shining again. The paint job isn’t flawless; it’s picked up a few scratches in storage (check the gallery for details), plus some artifacts under the clear coat and a couple of minor drips. Locks and latches are another to-do: door mechanisms, trunk lock, and hood latch all need to be fitted to button her up.

Inside, the original interior is ready for some love. A new carpet kit and the soft parts of the door panels are must-haves, though you can salvage some hardware from the originals to keep costs down. The rear interior panels are showing their age - cardboard and materials might need replacing or at least a refresh. Sun visors and the rearview mirror have gone missing, and the door glass is present but not installed, so plan to tackle that. It’s a solid base, but it’ll take some elbow grease to bring it back to its ’64 glory.

Mechanically, it’s close but not perfect. The exhaust system needs work, as it hangs low under the driver’s side floor, so expect to reroute or replace it. The throttle cable and linkage are a little sticky; they’ll need lubrication or adjustment since the pedal occasionally hangs up and has to be manually pulled back. Nothing major, just the kind of fine-tuning that’ll make this big-finned beauty drive as good as it looks once you’ve got it sorted. The brakes were in working order, but should be gone through due to sitting. The tires are older and should be evaluated and replaced if needed prior to driving.
