The Story

This Los Angeles built 1970 Barracuda Gran Coupe represents the upscale side of Mopar's pony car lineup. The Gran Coupe package elevated the Barracuda with luxury touches like leather seat inserts, dual consoles, woodgrain accents, and distinctive exterior badging that set it apart from standard models. This rolling chassis comes complete with a 383ci V8 that was pulled from a running car, ready to transform this six-cylinder luxury cruiser into a proper muscle machine. The original B5 Bright Blue Poly paint still shows throughout the engine bay, floors, and body panels, telling the story of its factory-correct heritage. The factory fender tag is present with the rarely seen inspection tag still underneath, appearing to have never been off the car.

Like its Lemon Twist sibling sold here on Build My Ride, this Gran Coupe comes from the same dedicated Mopar collector who acquired it from a friend's decades-long stash in Madera, California. This car reportedly spent its entire life in the Golden State, evidenced by the minimal rust and solid floors. With the seller's focus shifting to other projects, this Gran Coupe is ready for an enthusiast to preserve its luxury DNA while building it into the V8-powered street machine it was meant to be. The seller holds a clean California title in the previous owner's name, with a reserve that must be met.

What You Get

Drivetrain & Chassis:
This 1970 Barracuda, VIN BP23C0E131521, came from the factory with a 225ci Slant 6, delivering 145 horsepower, paired with an automatic transmission and an 8 3/4 inch rear axle. The original engine and transmission are missing, making it a rolling chassis ready for your powertrain choice. A V8 K-member with sway bar has been swapped for installation of the supplied 383 or your engine of choice. The 383 4BBL is dated 12/16/1966 and is believed to be the 330 horsepower version. The factory rear suspension is unaltered, while the front suspension was updated from a V8 car. The power steering and Bendix power 11" drum brakes are all in place. The rear axle spins freely, and all chassis components appear unmolested. The factory 14' Styled Road Wheels are in great condition with brushed trim rings in place.

Body & Frame:
Finished originally in B5 Bright Blue Poly, the original paint can still be seen in many areas on the car. The only bondo identified on the car is a small section on the passenger side quarter panel towards the tail. Both factory bumpers are in place and in very good condition. The hood is from a donor car, which opens, closes, and latches easily. The rest of the body is original sheet metal. The factory fender turn signals are in place. This car has the correct options to allow for a shaker hood, such as the 3 speed wiper motor. The doors and trunk close nicely, only requiring minor adjustment. The rust is minimal and limited to the passenger side lower quarter panel. There was a patch panel started on the same quarter panel that will need finishing. The trunk floor has been cut out even though it wasn't very rusty and a new trunk floor has been set in place. New trunk floor extensions are included as well. The grill and headlight buckets are original, all in great condition. All of the factory tinted glass is in place with the windshield showing scratches from windshield wipers without blades.

Interior & Floors:
The interior retains its factory original dash with simulated wood grain, gauges, steering wheel, bucket seats, rear seat, consoles, door panels, and rear interior panels. The glove box, door and lock are in good condition. There is an aftermarket radio and an equalizer mounted under the dash. The original seat belts are included and uninstalled. The floors are in excellent condition with only some surface rust in a few spots, no rot.

What You Need

Drivetrain & Chassis:
The missing Slant 6 and automatic transmission leave the drivetrain a blank slate. The 8 3/4 inch rear axle is ready for a performance makeover if desired. The drum brakes require a full inspection including shoes, lines, and hardware, or upgrade to disc brakes. Suspension bushings and shocks should be checked and replaced as necessary. The factory fuel tank and filler neck will need to be installed along with new rubber lines. A driveshaft and battery are needed. The tires are rollers enough for transport and storage, but need to be replaced.

Body & Frame:
Bodywork will be focused on the passenger lower rear quarter where there is rust and the area that has a patch panel started. The rear part of the quarter can be repaired with patch panel. The factory seams on the roof need to be ground out and refilled. All new weather stripping is required. Both license plate brackets are included

Interior & Floors:
The seats are ready to be recovered with new leather and vinyl seat covers. The headliner in a Gran Coupe is a fiber board covered in a velour-type material, which will need to be re-done. This allows for the overhead console to mount. The overhead console bezel with lights for "Door Ajar", "Low Fuel", and "Seat Belts" will need to be installed. The carpet is missing, requiring a new kit. The dash is in decent shape with a few cracks. The package tray has holes cut for aftermarket speakers and should be replaced. All of the wiring will need to be assessed for completeness and functionality, but it appears intact. The replacement trunk floor is ready to be welded in along with the provided trunk extensions. The floors on the interior do not require any metal work.
