The Story

This 1967 Mustang coupe rolled off the San Jose, California assembly line on June 15, 1967, wearing Pebble Beige paint, a black vinyl top, and Medium Saddle Haircell vinyl interior. Under the hood was a 289ci 2-barrel V8 paired with a C-4 automatic transmission and 2.79:1 rear axle. The DSO code indicates it was built for the Los Angeles district, and the license plate frames show King Motor Co. in Huntington Park, California, very likely the original selling dealer. The car presents as having spent its entire life in Los Angeles with service and registration records in Pasadena, California.

According to the registration tag on the license plate, this Mustang was driven until 1981, giving it about 15 years of service before being parked. For the past 45 years, it has sat untouched at the same Pasadena address, producing an unrestored example of a San Jose-built first-generation Mustang. The odometer shows 42,659 miles, though actual total mileage is unknown. The excellent windshield condition and local Pasadena-area history suggest it may have been a light-use local car rather than a highway commuter.

The previous owner's middle name was Tina with the last name Turner. She attended Pasadena High School in 1976, with the car's service records dating from 1977-1979, suggesting this may have been her high school and college car. Stacks of music sheets, musical performance cards, and event stubs were found in the trunk. Considering her African-American heritage, she may have come from a family who were fans of Tina Turner, or she may have been a relative of the famous singer.

The seller holds a clean California title. There is a reserve that must be met.

What You Get

Drivetrain & Chassis:
The original 289ci 2-barrel V8 appears to be in place and turns over easily by hand. The factory metal tag is still bolted to the intake. All original smog equipment and emissions components remain connected. All power steering components are in place. The C-4 automatic transmission appears original to the car. The 8-inch axle contains 2.79:1 gears with an open differential. With a battery connected, the starter clicks but does not operate. The original radiator remains in the car with factory stampings, which is uncommon to find on Mustangs of this era. The engine may fire up with a carburetor rebuild and basic recommissioning, or it may require a full rebuild, as the condition is unknown after 45 years of storage. A new fuel pump and new spark plug wires are included. All factory suspension is in place. The car rolls and steers easily.

Body & Frame:
The body appears mostly original with factory paint remaining on the cowl, hood, both front fenders, driver door, and driver quarter panel. The car has never been in a major accident, only the fender benders visible. The driver door is in great condition. The passenger door has been repainted and is in good condition aside from one dent. It's possible the passenger door was swapped, as the inside base paint shows red. The fenders and rockers are solid with no rust. There is body damage on the passenger rear quarter panel with old repair work using body filler visible where the paint has cracked. The vinyl top has completely disintegrated with numerous holes after sitting exposed for decades. The trunk lid is in good condition with original metal, showing only a small dent and no rust. All glass is original, including the windshield with an original Carlite stamp. The windshield is in remarkably good condition with only light marks from wipers without blades—far better than typical examples of this age. All doors close solidly and fit well. New ignition cylinder, door locks, and trunk lock are included. All factory trim is present.

The front and rear subframes are in excellent condition and free from rust. The front subframe rails show no denting, unlike what is typically seen on these cars.

Interior & Floors:
The interior appears completely original including dash, carpet, and seats. The center console is present and in decent condition with some pitting from age. The rear seat is in good condition and could be reused with no dry cracking or rips. The front passenger seat is dry but usable. The driver seat is dry and cracked and needs recovering. Both front seats should likely be recovered together. Door panels need replacement on both sides. The passenger door panel shows red paint underneath in some areas, suggesting previous work or a door swap. The gauges are in very good condition. The odometer shows 42,659 miles. The glove box opens and closes. The original headliner is still present.

The floors underneath are rust-free. There is some topside rust/surface pitting in the front area of the driver footwell. It does not show through underneath, suggesting surface pitting only. The carpet has not been pulled up, so there may be some additional pitting, but based on the underneath visuals, there is no rot.

What You Need

Drivetrain & Chassis:
The carburetor will need rebuilding or replacement. All fluids, hoses, belts, and fuel system components will need replacement after 45 years of storage. The power steering components will need rebuilding or replacement. The fuel tank needs replacement. The condition of internal engine components is unknown and should be assessed before attempting to start. The transmission shifter is stuck in neutral, so the entire unit will need assessment. The drum brakes will require complete rebuilding in addition to a new master cylinder. All suspension bushings and shocks will need replacement. The tires hold air while in storage but will need replacement prior to driving.

Body & Frame:
The passenger quarter panel needs bodywork to repair old filler areas, dents, and paint cracking. The driver quarter has a dent that creased the rear area by the extension and bumper, which will need significant repair or partial replacement. The inside flat bottom of the driver quarter has rust holes and needs patching. There are a couple small rust holes on the rear bottom edge of the driver quarter. The rust holes from the vinyl top need repair or full replacement of the roof skin. The small dents on the trunk lid and passenger door need to be worked out. Install all new door and trunk locks. All weatherstripping will need replacement throughout. The subframes do not need anything.

Interior & Floors:
Both front seats should be recovered, even though the passenger seat is not torn up like the driver seat. Both door panels need replacement and paint on the passenger door face. New dash pad, headliner, and carpet are needed. The package tray has holes cut for speakers and should be replaced. There is some spot rust on some of the seatbelt chrome. Interior light lenses will need replacement. The trunk needs a new gas tank and trunk mat. The wiring harness will need a full assessment.
