The Story

Imagine flying to Italy to ask Leonardo Fioravanti, the head of the design studio at Pininfarina, if he will design a car that you could make out of fiberglass, and he simply responds, "why don't you just copy one of the cars that you like, that we've already done?". Leonardo only one condition though, "just don't call it a Ferrari, give it your own name". That was the beginning of Kevin Moran's journey to create the "Cambiano", a ground up recreation of the Ferrari Daytona 365 GTB Coupe. In 1982, Kevin, a former engineer at Ford in the 50's, used an original wrecked Ferrari Daytona was used to take measurements and help create the molds, which were quite costly. After originally trying a Fiat based frame and engine, they were scrapped for a much more robust custom tube chassis, plus full independent suspension from a Ford Thunderbird SC, and a Ford Mustang 5.0L H.O. engine. This is a one-of-a-kind replica, a unique piece of automotive history.

In March 1993, the Cambiano was featured by Jerry Heasley in Specialty Car Magazine. Jerry Heasley is a veteran automotive book author, magazine writer, and photographer. More than 6,000 of his articles have appeared in more than 100 different car magazine titles over the past 30 years. A copy of the magazine will be included with the sale and the article is posted in the photo gallery.

The seller has owned around 70 Daytona Spyder replicas and was very excited to find his first Coupe. He had plans to finish this one and enjoy it, but moved to Florida and does not have room for it there. The car is titled as a 1991 Special Construction vehicle and the seller purchased it in 2022 from the original builder's estate. It holds a clean Florida Title in the seller's name. This auction has a reserve that will need to be met in order for the car to sell.

What You Get

The foundation of the Cambiano is a custom NASCAR style chassis made with 2" x 4" rectangular steel tubing, mated to Ford Thunderbird SC front crossmember and IRS rear suspension and differential. It has 50/50 weight distribution and 4 wheel vented disc brakes. It weighed 2,800 pounds with the small block ford and Borg Warner T-5. The IRS 8.8 rear differential has factory 2.73 gears and Ford Traction-Loc limited slip. The wheels are 16.5x7 Cougar XR-7.

The fuel system includes a fuel cell mounted in the trunk with an electric fuel pump. The battery tray is mounted on the passenger side of the trunk. It features a six point roll cage that is welded to the frame.

The tail lights are genuine Ferrari replacements. If any replacement parts are needed for the car, the owner can source or make them for you. If the buyer would like plexiglass side windows, he can source those as well and guide on how to install them. The owner rates the paint job quality an 8.5/10 with very few blemishes.

What You Need

Add your choice of engine and transmission to complete the drivetrain. Using a similar small block Ford engine and T-5 manual transmission as previously used would be the easiest bolt in with no fabrication needed. A radiator and exhaust system are also needed. The bladder in the fuel cell should be checked and replaced if needed.

The windshield will need to be replaced due to being cracked. A replacement Ferrari windshield will fit as the current one does. The seats as pictured are not included, so you will need to add your own seats. The car does not currently have any seat belts. Since the car was built primarily for the track, it does not have bumpers. The owner has the tooling to make aluminum bumpers if desired. The tires should be replaced due to age.
