The Story

This Los Angeles built 1970 Plymouth GTX wears one of Mopar's most eye-catching high impact colors: Lime Light. With a reported 7,748 GTX models produced that year, finding one in this vivid green color is a rare opportunity. There were reportedly 478 painted Lime Light, and of those, 277 were automatics. Originally equipped with a 440ci 4BBL Super Commando V8 making 375 horsepower, this GTX has a replacement 440ci 4BBL installed. This GTX has spent its entire life in LA County, making it a true California car with a solid rust free frame and interior floors. The original fender tag is present, confirming its factory FJ5 Lime Light finish and California emissions specification.

The seller, a dedicated Mopar collector and racer, acquired this GTX in August 2024 as part of a seven-car purchase from a Los Angeles storage lot where it had been sitting for 30 years. A friend had discovered the stash years earlier and left his contact information with the owner. When the owner passed away, his brother reached out to sell all of the cars together. The seller, initially targeting just one vehicle, ended up purchasing seven to secure the deal.

The seller holds a California clean title, with a reserve that must be met in order for it to sell.

What You Get

Drivetrain & Chassis:
This GTX has a non-original 1974 440 HP engine installed with correct exhaust manifolds, paired with a 727 TorqueFlite automatic transmission from the same C-body donor. The engine turns over freely with the starter. The 8 3/4 rear end is believed to have a 2.76 open differential, but unconfirmed. The factory power steering is in place, along with manual drum brakes. All factory air conditioning components are present, which saves time having to track them down. The suspension appears complete and unmolested, except for long rear shackles. Recently mounted BFG radial T/A tires have been mounted on 14-inch rally wheels, making it ready for transport and storage.

Body & Frame:
Originally finished in Lime Light green with black vinyl transverse side stripes, this GTX retains significant amounts of original paint visible throughout the engine compartment, frame rails, trunk, and floors. The car has been repainted at least twice over the years, going from Lime Light to red and then to black. Someone added vinyl top trim at some point, though it was not a factory option. The factory fender tag shows relatively simple options: power steering, air conditioning, C16 console, C55 bucket seats, M21 drip rail molding, J25 3-speed wipers, and the V6X black transverse side stripes. Both bumpers are in place, with the front being damaged and the rear having a few small dents. The frame rails and floors underneath show in excellent condition with original Lime Light paint still visible, demonstrating the benefits of California storage, even though parked outside.

Interior & Floors:
The original interior features its factory bucket seats with center console and automatic shifter. The original rear seat is complete. The dashboard and original woodgrain details are in place. The floors are solid with no rust, consistent with its lifelong California residence. All of the glass is original and in good condition. The trunk floor has a couple of small rust holes and could use a patch.

What You Need

Drivetrain & Chassis:
While the 440 HP engine is a strong foundation, it is not the original powerplant for this GTX and should be gone through or completely rebuilt if needed. The carburetor and air cleaner are missing and will need to be sourced. All fluids, hoses, belts, and filters should be replaced after 30 years of storage. The fuel system will require a complete inspection and likely a tank cleaning or replacement. The condition of the transmission is unknown. The brake system needs a full rebuild including master cylinder, wheel cylinders, shoes, lines, and hardware, or consideration of a disc brake upgrade. Suspension bushings and shocks should be inspected and replaced as necessary. The BFG tires are old and should be replaced before driving on the road due to unknown age.

Body & Frame:
The quarters will need to be replaced on both sides due to rust from blocked drain holes that allowed water and debris to collect. The Dutchman panel below the rear window requires replacement. The trunk extensions have holes and need replacement, though the trunk floor itself only needs a patch. One door requires a couple of patches in the bottom corners. The front fenders have been trimmed on the front edge to accommodate oversized 1970s-era tires and will need attention or replacement. The hood has some rust on the front left corner. The driver door only opens with the interior handle. All weather stripping will need replacement throughout the car. As a California emissions car, the exhaust would have originally featured turndowns rather than tips.

Interior & Floors:
The seats are serviceable as a ratty driver, but would need to be restored for anything else. The carpet is worn and replacement will be required. The headliner had fallen out and will need to be replaced. All interior trim, door panels, and the package tray cover should be assessed and restored or replaced as needed. The dash pad is cracked with the metal dash in great condition. The steering wheel is cracked and missing the center piece. The center console lid does not close and latch well. All wiring will need to be inspected for completeness and functionality after decades of storage.
